We have another new critter on the farm, Black Soldier Flies (BSFs).
Our goal is to create food for the chickens we plan to get next spring. The BSF larvae will be high-protein goodies for our feathered friends. Another 55-gallon tote and another living thing that eats food waste, yet makes something good and helpful for the farm.
Beware of Grendel (our name for the BSFs)
For twelve winters, seasons of woe,
the lord of the Shieldings suffered under
his load of sorrow; and so, before long,
the news was known over the whole world.
Sad lays were sung about the beset king,
the vicious raids and ravages of Grendel,
his long and unrelenting feud,
nothing but war.
– Beowulf, Narrator describes Grendel attacks on the people of Heorot.
Yes, we named the flies after one of the monsters from Beowulf. They live in the dark and are certainly mysterious, but hopefully not as evil as their namesake. We are hoping that these Grendels will be a redeemed lot.

We have a dehydrator coming this week so we can start processing the larvae after this initial group grows up and produces the next generation of larvae. Stay tuned!
Chickens next spring!
