Worm shed progress! Roof is on ahead of the coming snow storm. It still needs insulation, ventilation, and more paint, but we are getting closer to moving the Gerards (our worm army) out and having a better workspace than our front porch! My hubby is getting pretty awesome at building sheds for our little homestead.

February 1:

Peter and I are heading to the Dominican Republic in a little over a week for a missions trip with the music ministry from our church (members of our adult, youth and children's choirs along with some orchestra/rhythm team peeps...we will share more about that later) and that means extra work at the homestead this weekend to get ready for spring!

The Gerards, our Vermicompost army, were fed extra bananas and coffee grounds along with their regular worm food this morning.

This afternoon, we cleared the area where our two beehives will go in March and prepped areas for our raised bed gardens closer to the house. Best of all we set up our worm/bee keeping/garden shed! We moved 3 worm bins out as a test for the rest of the winter season. The shed is insulated and the worms have lots of bedding to wiggle down deep and stay warm. Peter found Gerards hanging out in our compost pile today that survived the frigid winter days we had...we think it will be a good move for our inside worms to go out. If those bins look good when we get back, all of the Gerards can move out! Yippee!

*Note and confession...while we were away in the DR, there was an extreme cold snap in Virginia. We came back to find frozen worms! We felt awful!

However, we learned in short order that worms are pretty awesome in that apparently they can un-freeze! Not all survived, but we thought we had a total loss, so we were thrilled for the Gerards that came back from the brink of death!
